An Easy Chicken Dinner with Two Cooking Methods
This Chicken Gyros Rice Bowl is a quick, flavorful dinner that’s perfect for busy weeknights. Tender chicken, sweet peppers, onion, garlic, and aromatic gyros spices come together in one pan and are served over fluffy rice.
Whether you prefer the classic version with a little oil or a lighter oil-free version, you’ll end up with a delicious, family-friendly meal that’s full of flavor.
Ingredients
- 800 g chicken breast strips (geschnetzeltes)
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced (optional)
- 1–2 tsp gyros seasoning
- 1 tsp sweet paprika
- ½ tsp turmeric
- ½ tsp hot paprika (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Classic Version Only
- 2–3 tbsp vegetable oil
Optional
- 2–3 tbsp natural yogurt (for a creamier finish)
Method 1 – Classic
Season the chicken with the gyros seasoning, sweet paprika, turmeric, hot paprika (if using), salt, and pepper.
If you have time, let it marinate for 15–30 minutes.
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat.
Cook the chicken in batches until nicely browned.
Transfer it to a plate.
Using the same pan, cook the onion until slightly softened.
Add the garlic and sliced peppers and cook for about 3–4 minutes.
Return the chicken to the pan and cook everything together for another 3–5 minutes, until the vegetables are tender but still slightly crisp.
Taste and adjust the seasoning.
If you’d like a creamier dish, stir in the yogurt just before serving.
Method 2 – Oil-Free
Season the chicken exactly as above.
Heat a good-quality non-stick frying pan without any oil.
Add the chicken and let it cook without stirring too often.
The chicken will first release its juices. Allow most of the liquid to evaporate so the meat begins to brown naturally.
Whenever it starts sticking, add 2–3 tablespoons of water or chicken stock instead of oil.
Add the onion and peppers.
Cook for another 5–6 minutes, adding a splash of water if needed.
Taste and adjust the seasoning.
If desired, stir in the yogurt after removing the pan from the heat.

- Don’t overcrowd the pan—cook the chicken in batches for better browning.
- A non-stick pan is essential for the oil-free version.
- Instead of oil, use small splashes of water or chicken stock to keep the chicken from sticking.
- Cook the peppers until they’re tender but still slightly crisp for the best texture.
- This recipe is also delicious served in tortillas, pita bread, or on top of roasted potatoes.
